Interesting setlist, crack musicians
Chris Botti really made his name from playing for and with Sting, who taught him that surrounding yourself with the best musicians makes you look even better. He’s learned that lesson well, and wisely and generously shared the spotlight with his band— a core lineup of guitar, keyboards, bass and drums, with an additional violinist, sax, and vocalist that rotated in and out of the various numbers. The setlist ranged from Basie to Zeppelin.
Botti has made the artistic choice to use a lot of reverb in his trumpet’s amplification, which I personally find heavy handed. He closed his show with a brief “unplugged” segment, and I found the clarity refreshing. The house lights inexplicably came on and off repeatedly during the first half of the show— I was sitting directly behind the sound guy who was beside himself with frustration about it. Botti graciously had to stop and make a joke about it; he handled it like a pro but it marred the show.
